Leader of the opposition People's Democratic Movement (PDM) Hon. Floyd Seymour has called on the Premier of the Turks and Caicos Islands , Hon. Dr. Michael Misick to step aside as leader and let someone else act as Premier, until his name is cleared from an alleged sexual assault allegation.
The opposition leader during a national address said that it was with deep regret that the Premier had been implicated in a serious matter involving sexual misconduct, leaving the entire country in a state of shock and dismay.
“This is beyond a personal matter and is a national issue. We therefore call on the Hon. Misick to put the good interest of the country ahead of his own and step aside as Premier and allow some one else to act as Premier, while he seeks to be exonerated of this serious accusation. It is the only right thing to do to ensure preservation of the TCI's reputation and that of the office of the Premier.”
The Premier has since publicly stated that he will not be steeping down from his office and is confident of being cleared of any wrong doing.
“I am confident that I will be completely and fully exonerated of these false and outrageous allegations. Due to the ongoing investigation, I will not be commenting any further on this matter. Let me be clear - I will continue my duties as Premier. We have a lot yet to accomplish.” the Premier said in his public address to the nation regarding the allegations.
Hon. Seymour told The SUN that he disagrees with the Premier's stance because it is not a personal issue, but one that affects the entire TCI.
“All of the media reports out there are not saying Michael Misick, they are stating that the Premier, the Head of Office of this country is under investigation. The title and office that he has is what is causing such attention, and I think that it would be wise of him to step down until the investigation is completed,” said Hon. Seymour.
The PDM leader went on to admonish the Premier for allowing the current situation to present itself, and for comprising his office and responsibilities.
He said that w hile it is unfortunate that yet again we hear the Premier “categorically deny” another serious allegation, the world must know that we (Turks and Caicos Islanders) are a noble people, a people that stand on the side of law and order, good governance and the rights of all peoples of the world.
“We ask for all to allow for the rule of law to prevail and for justice to take its course. The Eyes of the world are watching and justice must not only be served but must be seen to be done. Therefore we urge those in authority to ensure that this investigation is carried out with the utmost integrity and expediency.”
