As the 20 th anniversary celebrations of the Clement Howell High School continue throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands , the school located in Blue Hills Providenciales, unveiled a bust sculpture in honour of its patron in the presence of his remaining family members.

Students and specially invited guests joined with the Howell family in the unveiling of the bust, and the renaming of classroom blocks ceremony on Wednesday April 30 th .

As the early showers threatened, the ceremony, originally planned for outdoors, was shifted to the School's auditorium where students were given a history of the late Clement Howell urged to live up to his high standards.

Director of Education Mrs. Beatrice Fulford in her remarks charged the students to try and elevate the school in all they do off and on campus.

“The name Clement Howell is synonymous with commitment, longevity, excellence, mental fortitude, enthusiasm and nobility. Also he is associated with talent, honesty, willingness and endurance; this is a legacy that I believe any progressive institution would wish to carry.

“ Clement Howell High School must be seen as your institution of choice not only when you are in Providenciales but wherever you find yourselves. You must demonstrate the qualities that are consistent with the name Clement Howell, you must represent his ideals,” said Mrs. Fulford.

Her sentiments were also echoed by Parliamentary Representative for Blue Hills Hon. Gregory Lightbourne who is also a nephew of the great man.

“It is a privilege and honour to bring greetings on such an occasion as we continue to celebrate the Clement Howell High School 20 th anniversary what is more appropriate than to have a monument in honour of the late Mr. Clement Howell.

“He was very involved in ensuring that a High School was established in Provo ; I can remember his significant personality as if he was alive today. When he smiled it was because he was being polite, when he laughed it was because someone was telling a joke, and when he didn't do both he was being an educator.”

Tanya Parnell, a former student and family member of Mr. Clement Howell also paid tribute and urged all students to follow in his footsteps.

“It is a wonderful tribute to Mr. Howell in honour of his legacy; he was a great community leader and national hero. His work can be seen in his contributions to education in the church and the political institution. It is important that we endeavour to live in the footsteps of this great man and to remember that despite circumstances do your best each and every day is the achievement of excellence.

Bringing remarks on behalf of his mother Minister of Health, Hon. Dr. Lillian Boyce, Kelian Howell, grandson of Mr. Clement Howell recalled his former days at the school where he served as head boy.

“ Clement Howell High School has been an extremely important institution in the lives of thousands of students. It is here that our characters were defined and our minds sharpened and where we were ultimately prepared to deal with the world of academics and life in general.”

“I wish to encourage the students of this school to have pride in themselves and take their education extremely seriously, and continue building on the strong legacy that has been established by those who have gone before you.”

After the indoor ceremony the activities went across to the school's garden area where a sculpture created by Arts and Craft teacher Mr. Michael Lewis, of Mr. Clement Howell was unveiled, followed by the renaming of the various blocks of the school.
